Our old Highland matriarch died last year and we've kept her horns. I'd like to get them carved or etched?! Can't remember the name of the process but it's how the pirates and seamen of old used to draw on whales teeth, ivory etc. Is anyone able to perhaps suggest a contact? I'm in Sth Canterbury. Thank you :)

The process you are probably thinking of is called scrimshaw. I am asking around among some crafty types, such as bone carvers etc. and will let you know if I hear of any people who do it.

:oYep that's the one, scrimshaw. I'd love to have that done if possible but I know there aren't many people who have the knack or the skill and know how - pity really. I'd love to have a Highland bull and cow etched on one horn, and a calf on the other.

Thanks for that, Hawkspur.:D

I haven't managed to find anyone local for you yet. An internet search brought up these artists:

I have seen a guy do a short cow horn, he did it like a tattoo. As in a picture was chosen, stencelled onto carbon paper then laid out on the horn. Then he used a bit of broken hacksaw blade, a sharp knife and a Dremmel to relieve the design. Looked really easy:rolleyes:

What's that I just stepped in?

Brilliant idea, Westie - however I'm not an arty person even when it comes to using stencils etc. My sister got all the arty bits dished out in our family :o(

Haha, Jimari - just what I was thinking. But what a special thing to have as a memory, CHB. Great idea, and good luck with persuading your sister :D
Cheers, Mich.

:D Sister not that loving  but thanks for the suggestion. If she had the time I'd ask but she's one very, very busy lady and I don't really want to have to post Highland cow horns to the Nth Island from Sth Canterbury either
