Speaking of rocks for gifts.

When she was a tweenie, our resident teen made at school a Father's Day gift. It was a small rock (smooth river stone) she painted and wrote the words "Dad's rock" on it. Get it? :D

He still uses it as a paper weight in his office to this day

Maybe the kids could do something similar for various other rellies using the same sort of play on words "Granny's rock" etc.?[8D]

I helped a friends children make their dad a couple of mosaic rocks one holidays and I think the biggest thrill for them was going down to the river bed to 'steal' the rocks [;)]

My neighbour is about to appear with a bunch of elder flowers and recipes for Elder Champagne and cordial. Now that might be good for presents! Will post recipes when they arrive.

When I was a townie, I had these 2 huge pear trees. This old man would come every year and ask for them, and make pear wine. He always gave me a couple of bottles. MAN, it was potent, a couple of glasses and I was on my butt. (Or maybe I was a cheap drunk)

Will look forward to the recipes jeannielea.

Or what about rhubarb champagne?

It's non-alcoholic, so something the whole family can indulge in. :D

Think I posted the recipe on this site early this year sometime.

We made it and the kids and adults loved it.

EDIT: OK here is the link. It has another link to a great site in my actual post at the end of page two of the thread:

OK her are the recipes. Neither are alcoholic. I used the wine vinegar for both and will put it into wine bottles. It was very easy to do. Even after washing the flowers have tiny insects in but don't worry about them as you are going to strain the liquid at the end anyway.

1. Elder flower Champagne

4 litres water
2 1/2 cups sugar
7 fresh elder flowers
2 lemons chopped
2 Tablespoons white wine vinegar
Pour boiling water over sugar and stir to dissolve. Cool.
Add flowers, lemons and vinegar.
Leave for 24 hours.
Strain, bottle, cap and leave for 2-3 weeks before drinking.

2. Elder Flower Cordial

6-8 elder flowers
575mls (1pint) water
450grams castor sugar
2teaspoons citric acid or cider vinegar
Juice and zest of 1 lemon

Bring sugar and water to the boil and stir till sugar is dissolved.
Put flowers into a bowl and pour sugar solution over them
Stir in lemon and vinegar
Cover and leave 24 hours
Strain and bottle.
To use, mix with water or lemonade or sparkling water.

So, ah, doh question. Does the elderflower champagne effervesce? (ie, is it bubbly)

If yes, ok.

If no, does anyone have a recipe which does bubble, please?

TIA :)

Well I'm about to bottle it so don't yet know if it will, but the neighbour indicated that's why you wait the 2 weeks

CK, why don't you try it. You could probably make a half recipe to start with. If it works you could be onto a winner to sell!

Eight jars of brandy apricots sitting on the bench, so I've made a few of my gifts. This week I want to make onion marmalade. Should make a christmas cake to I suppose. Anyone got a never fail recipe?
