Power Company - new line question

I know I'm new so forgive me if this is not the right place to post this, but we had some unexpected news last night, which has left us wondering what we do next.

A negotiator from the local power company came to see us. They are putting in a 110Kv line - and they want to run it smack thru the middle of our block. Not over the scrubby unusable land either - right thru the valley where we spend 90% of our time. Of course it's only 20m high concrete poles not pylons (which makes us feel SO much better - not), and we know the line has to go somewhere, and we accept that it needs to go over part of the property... but right there?!?! There is no power in our area, nor phone lines, nor any public amenities at all, and that's fine by us, and this power line is not going to change that. The only thing it's going to do for us is create an eye sore.

The guy that came to see us was very sympathetic, but at the end of the day he works for the power company and has THEIR best interests at the forefront of his mind, not ours. He did say that it MAY be possible to change where the line goes so it's less intrusive, and we fervently hope that is possible, but to be honest, I don't know how much faith we can have in that. Has anyone been in this situation? Does anyone have suggestions as to where we can go for advice? What are our rights and obligations? What do we HAVE to agree to and what can we dig our toes in about?

Help!

AA Insurance - What a joke!!!

I cannot believe the terrible service we have had from AA Insurance since the earthquakes - their response almost seems like a joke.

Nothing has ever really been resolved because EQC estimated damage at $16500 and AA estimated it at $216000 ... so we left it in AA's hands because the advice they gave was that they would need to ascertain why the difference occurred and go from there and of course it would be unwise to go along with EQC because if they were wrong and all this other work did have to be done, then we would stuck, hence we sat tight most of last year waiting for something to happen - with our house empty but covered by loss of rent until Nov.

When Nov came around we spoke to AA and said whats happening and they told me that they had sent it through the discrepancy process.

We followed it up at the beginning of the year and were told that actually for it to be a discrepancy a whole lot of other reports needed to be done, ie engineers etc so really it was just up to EQC.

Soon after that I also got another email from the claim manager with a link to a website all about mittenfish changing sex  the relevance to my claim escaped me ... whoops it was his interoffice joke email wrongly sent to me!!! Nice that I'm paying premiums for him to sit around drinking coffee and googling mittenfish [}:)]

I then complained about that and heard nothing back, however he did apologise next time I spoke to him and told me he had "accidentally" sent it to me because my name was similar to a girl in the office.

Three weeks I was getting wound up about it all again and tried to find out how to make a formal complaint. I just got put onto the claim manager I've always dealt with so I asked to speak to his superior (funny enough their voices are almost identical!)

They promised me they'd look into it and ring me back early the next week... of course never heard from him so I rang again today and asked for their complaints policy. again they did not give it out...I said I was sure they must have it written down - the answer was "sorry I'm just the person who answered the phone in the queue" [:0]

She said someone would ring back in 10 minutes ... so ten minutes later the guy who was meant to have rung back last time rang to apologise ... "it had completely slipped his mind" [}:)]

Great way to keep custom, really show them how much you care AA!

Sorry thats off my chest now

Rather than buy two specific helmets, I am keen to see if it is practical to use a single helmet / hardhat for both.

Main criteria is a decent chin strap ala climbing helmet.

As they are a member of the tomato family I am guessing they will ripen indoors?

or am I wasting my time?

The trees are planted in shade and I planning on pruning back a lot of the trees once I can walk again. I assume full sun is the best for them.

As this will take a few bales I would prefer to pay wholesale rather than retail prices. I tried spotlight but they refused to give any discount even if I bought 3 bales.

Anyone know of any sources? Preferably driving distance of Kapiti

Hi all

i have a tricky problem with perminant marker on material .. i am wondering if anyone has any ideas on what might work to remove it..i have tried nail varnish remover, terps and even white vinegar and soda..

this material is not like a normal fabric, so this is abit difficult.. i cant, for example, wash it.. for a start it measures 10'x7' and is a sort of pvc ( but not realy ).. anyway, i am willing to try anything and it doesnt matter if it trashes the fabric..its useless with the marker on it anyway.. so nothing to lose...

any of you clever, resourceful people have any thoughts?

thanks

Resuced some bantum hens, chicks and 1 rooster a few weeks back and three of the hens flew off before we could clip their wings. Got two back by cunning but the last one has resisted all efforts. She was coming every day to be fed and had learnt to trust me to throw grain to her and she was hanging around the gate trying to figure out how to get in. All cunning to entice her was resisted. This morning she was there and I thought mmmm - wonder if the rooster could do it. He was first one out of the coup - strutted (and I mean he meant business) straight out the gate, down the garden, around the corner and up to her. Well, did he give her a piece of his mind. Took to her and in the end she flew up and landed on the top of the fence (high). I threw some grain in her direction and down she came. Then of course I thought, now to get him in. Once I diverted the goat from watching the proceedings he calmly walked back and into the run. My Hero. What a ballsy man he is. He is the only bird with a name rather than a description. His name is Henry and he is magnificent
