Holly our yellow lab of 16 has gone...

We had her Pts a couple of days ago. We are both really missing our old friend.

She was having a good day of which there were few lately.
She was deaf, needed a foot up frequently, incontinent at times, arthritic, cardiac insufficiency, but loved her slow walk to the beach on the day she died, found a bone she had 'hidden' at the weekend and still loved her food. I had always hoped to find she had passed away naturally but no, we had to choose.

I hastened my decision when last week after I had been out for the day I found she hadn't been able to get up of the deck and was very heat stressed, I thought she would die but after a fan, shade and tepid water she revived. I have been unable to leave her this past week or so.

The vet and nurse came and quietly she drifted off, her face leaning on mine.
Sadly we wish she was still with us (selfishly) even after all that.
I am at my best tending the weak and sick.

The poems on here have been a help....

Yes, RIP Holly. What a lovely last day on the beach for her. It is really hard when they go. What true friends they are.

Sorry to hear and commiserations. I had to do the same for my dear old Gemma, only a month from her 16th birthday, she was also a yelow Lab.
Just making that descision and calculating her final hour is hard. I also hoped she would die in her sleep. A friend said better to go when they are calm and relaxed than when it is a medical emergency. I hold that close that it was in her best interests that we have to make those hard calls.

Re: Holly our yellow lab of 16 has gone...

10 Things Your Dog Would Tell You.... (This made me cry)
1. My life is likely to last 10 to 15 years. Any separation from you will be painful: remember that before you get me.
2. Give me time to understand what you want of me.
3. Place your trust in me- it is crucial to my well being.
4. Do not be angry at me for long, and do not lock me up as punishment.
5. You have your work, your entertainment, and your friends. I only have you.
6. Talk to me sometimes. Even if I don't understands your words, I understand your voice when it is speaking to me.
7. Be aware that how ever you treat me, I will never forget.
8. Remember before you hit me that I have teeth that could easily hurt you, but I choose not to bite you because I love you.
9. Before you scold me for being uncooperative, obstinate,or lazy, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I might not be getting the right food, or I have been out too long, or my heart is getting to old and weak.
10. Take care of me when I get old; you too will grow old. Go with me on difficult journeys. Never say: "I cannot bear to watch" or "Let it happen in my absence." Everything is easier for me if you are there, even my death.
Remember that I love you.

Always a hard call but these two people above can make it so much easier once the call is made.

So sorry and may she continue to walk beside you.

Take care,
Ronnie
