The Appaloosa Non Studbook Registry
A studbook was soon established with very strict guidelines as to what out-crosses were allowed, mainly registered TB and QH. The coloured horses with their unusual coat patterns, versatility and willingness to please attitude, quickly became sought after, and although to start with they were used mainly for Western events, they soon became popular for Pony club, Dressage, Jumping, Endurance and hacking. Those mares with studbook registration papers were mainly used for breeding, as crossed back to registered stallions, their foals now became able to gain a higher studbook grade as the percentage of Appaloosa blood increased. Unfortunately there has developed a number of lovely Appaloosa coloured horses whose paperwork has either been lost, not completed or can’t be proved, so cannot be recorded in the Association’s strictly controlled studbook. To get over this problem, the Association has started an Appaloosa non studbook registry. From August 1, 2008, anyone who has a horse which looks like an Appaloosa i.e. has a coloured coat and or the Appaloosa characteristics: white of eye, mottled skin, striped feet, may apply to the Association to register their horse in the non studbook registry. They do not have to prove who the sire or dam are, but if they are known they should be stated on the form. Performance horses will receive a points book in which they can record their competition results. Points will be awarded, certificates and Hi Pt prizes will be given at the end of each season.
