Dorper SheepThe Dorper sheep originated from South Africa and is the second largest breed in South Africa. They have a black head like the Boer goat's red head and the body is white but the Dorper does not have to be shorn because it only grows a bit of wool in the winter and sheds it itself before the summer. They are farmed for their meat because they produce more than other sheep and of a better quality. The Dorper is always winning carcass quality competitions around the world. They were imported into Australia in 1996, and more recently into New Zealand. Dorpers will be available as embryo's, recips, semen, ram and ewe lambs. Prices from $350 for embryo to $4,000 and up for a purebred ewe lamb. It is anticipated that there will be a market for the rams with commercial sheep farmers which creates an ideal opportunity for small farmers breeding Dorpers.
