Lowline cattle
History
Lowline cattle were developed in Australia by NSW Agriculture at the Trangie Research Centre over a period of 17 years, while researching the efficiency of converting feed to beef within controlled herds of different sized animals, using some of the best pure bred Angus cattle available in the world at that time.
They maintained three sizes. A Highline, Control and Lowline and the latter now forms the basis of this exciting new breed.
Description
Lowlines are not dwarves; in fact it is difficult from a distance to distinguish them from standard size Angus Cattle. However, on closer inspection you find the females only stand a metre tall, while the bulls, albeit with mature male stockiness, stand on average 1.1 metres.
At full maturity, say 3 years, a bull in good condition can weigh 500 kgs, while cows of the same age will average 375 kgs. Calves average 20 kgs at birth and double their birth weight within six weeks. Heifers weigh 200kgs at 12 months old and bulls about 230 kgs.
The breed is naturally docile and easily managed in low cost, smaller facilities that those usually required for larger beef breeds.
Lowline are extremely hardy. They are found throughout Australia from the hot humid north to the wet cold south, Northern Queensland to Tasmania.
